Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Happy Summer everyone! With all this beautiful weather comes those pesky mosquitoes, which can transmit several serious equine neurologic diseases! One very serious disease spread by mosquitoes is Eastern Equine Encephalitis (also known as Triple E, or Equine Sleeping Sickness). There have already been 4 reported cases of Triple E in Florida this month!
Triple E causes non specific central nervous system signs such as:
- stumbling or circling
- head pressing
The mortality rate in horses infected with Triple E is almost 90%!
Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for infected horses at this time. The best way to protect your horses from this terrible disease, is to vaccinate them against the virus. It is also important to keep the mosquito population to a minimum around your barns and pastures. Standing water is the preferred breeding grounds for mosquitoes, so remove any stagnant water that may be near where your horses live (old tires, kiddie pools, buckets not in use, etc).
If possible, try to keep your horses stabled during peak mosquito hours. The use of fans in your barn will also help keep the mosquitoes out!
Prevention is Key
