OUR EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Our Externship Program looks to involve visiting students in the daily activities of the practice. We provide on-site housing, which enables our externs to be available for emergencies. We find that some of the most interesting cases present themselves at night or on the weekend. Students are given the opportunity to participate in case evaluation, diagnostics, management, and hospitalized patient care.
We look to fill our internship positions from those who have spent time with us as an extern. We typically have five interns on two-week rotations: Surgery, Anesthesia, Reproduction/Ambulatory, Internal Medicine, and Nights. With that in mind, externs are placed into these same rotations so that we can provide them with a broad view of what it would be like to intern at EMCO. During their time with us, we are evaluating their veterinary abilities to date, and how the extern fits in to the work group. In addition to their veterinary knowledge and skills, we look for character and personality traits that will enable the extern (potential intern) to work well in an established group.
We accept 3rd and 4th year veterinary students for externships in blocks of 1-3 weeks. Because we are 100% equine, we require that you have basic horse handling skills. We welcome students from foriegn countries, and have hosted many in our externship program, several of whom completed internships in our practice as well. However, we do require that you can communicate well in English.
If you are interested in scheduling an externship, please send an email with your requested dates and CV/resume to:
